Therapy for Black individuals

A Yoruba word meaning the power to create that which you speak. The ability to make whatever one says happen. It is “the ability to bring one’s will into manifestation”, “so it will be”, or “it definitely shall be so!”

Asé (ah-shay):

Hey, I’m Dena!

Finding the right therapist can often seem like a never-ending journey.

Finding someone who gets you and is going to support you in the ways that you need is huge in this journey.

You’re not just coming into therapy with some little stuff. You’re bringing me ALL your shit. So you need someone who is going to be your cheerleader, but also call you out (gently) on your bullshit thinking.

I hear this loud and clear! I want you to feel supported while you're on this journey -
you're not doing it alone.

This page is specifically designed to help you get to know me and the space you’re coming to. Let’s not waste anymore time.

Black Washington marriage and family therapist

First of all, I am NOT your typical therapist.

I'm pretty relaxed, chill, and laid-back. I love to laugh and have a great time in sessions, but I also am very serious about the work that I do with clients.

I like to sprinkle "fuck" and “shit” into my everyday vocab like little bits of colorful confetti. Feel free to join in on the fun.

I believe that life is short and no one has time for beating around the bush. Therefore, I don’t sugar coat things, but I also won't force you to take steps you're not ready for. However, I will challenge you to sit in the those uncomfortable feelings or new situations/thoughts.

I love working with people who want to do the work.

My ideal clients are aware that their therapy sessions are not equipped with a magic wand to instantly solve all their problems. They understand that change takes time and effort, and they are willing to put in the work even when it gets tough. They are committed to making positive changes in their lives because they know it is necessary for growth and healing.

Change takes time.

I can't do the work for you, but I will walk beside you every step of the way.

This work is important. YOU are important.

Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or simply seeking personal growth, I am here to support you. I utilize an eclectic approach, drawing from the principles of solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to help you navigate through your challenges and empower you to make positive changes in your life. Remember, therapy is a confidential and judgment-free space where you can express yourself freely. Your well-being is my priority, and I am committed to providing you with the support and tools you need to thrive.

You deserve a space to be unapologetically you.

I have been in the mental health & behavioral health field for over ten years. I have worked at a residential treatment facility for youth, a foster care agency, and day treatment facility for children and youth. The past experiences that I have had, I enjoyed them all. They allowed me to have a better understanding about people and the things that they struggle with. Those experiences pushed me further into the field and I am so happy to be here. I graduated with my second masters in marriage and family therapy in 2023. After graduating, I decided to open my part-time practice in 2024. Opening my own private practice was always a goal that I wanted before I completed grad school. God allowed it to happen! I enjoy serving others and helping people find solutions to their problems. So that's about me. I hope to learn more about you.
